FSYO 2010-2011 AUDITION INFORMATION

ATTENTION OVERTURE STRINGS APPLICANTS:

NEW FOR THE 2010-2011 SEASON: PARTICIPATION IN OVERTURE STRINGS WILL NOW REQUIRE A BRIEF AUDITION, to be held at the beginning of August. Audition Requirements: Each student is required to prepare the assigned excerpts and scales for the instrument and orchestra they are auditioning. The student may be required to perform a one-minute solo of his/her choice, depending on the instrument and orchestra choice. Please pay close attention to the instructions on the orchestral excerpts, as they will specify if a solo is required.

Special note: String players auditioning for the Prelude Orchestra are required to play the written bowings. Fingerings are at the discretion of the student/teacher, but the bowings are non-negotiable.

Scale Requirements: All scales and arpeggios are to be MEMORIZED. Scales and arpeggios will be played in even eighth notes. String players use separate bows. All instruments will play one of the following major scales and arpeggios:

• Overture Strings
  • For scale requirements, see the note at the bottom of the Overture Strings audition music, above.
• Prelude
  • Violin: C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb scales and arpeggios two octaves.
  • Viola: C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb scales and arpeggios two octaves.
  • Cello: C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb scales and arpeggios two octaves.
  • Bass: G, F, A scales and arpeggios two octaves. C, D, Bb, Eb, one octave.
  • Woodwind/Brass: All major scales two octaves when instrument allows.
• Philharmonia
  • Violin: G,A,C,D scales and arpeggios three octaves. E, F, Bb, Eb, Ab two octaves.
  • Viola: C, D, F, G scales and arpeggios must be three octaves. E, Bb, Eb, Ab, A two octaves.
  • Cello: C, D, F, G scales and arpeggios must be three octaves. E Bb, Eb, Ab, A two octaves.
  • Bass: E, F, G, A, Bb, C scales and arpeggios must be two octaves. Eb, Ab, D one octave.
  • Woodwind/Brass: All major scales three octaves when instrument allows. All others, two octaves.
• Symphonic
  • Violin: G,A,C,D, E, F, B, Bb, Eb, Ab scales and arpeggios three octaves.
  • Viola: C, D, F, G, E, B, Bb, Eb, Ab, A scales and arpeggios three octaves.
  • Cello: C, D, F, G, E, B, Bb, Eb, Ab, A scales and arpeggios three octaves.
  • Bass: E, F, G, A, Bb, C, Eb, A, D scales and arpeggios must be two octaves.
  • Woodwind/Brass/Percussion: All major scales and arpeggios three octaves where possible.

Percussion: FSYO has a rotating percussion section. This section plays with all three orchestras and rotates instruments. For percussion audition music, click here. Students will audition on timpani, xylophone and snare drum. Instruments will be provided at the audition site.
