Concerto Competition Finalists

On November 19, the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra will continue to celebrate their 55th Season with the annual Concerto Competition Concert. This free recital gives you the rare opportunity to hear Central Florida's finest young musicians as they step out of their orchestral roles and compete as soloists. The recital is the final step in the FSYO's annual Concerto Competition, where the winning student will earn the opportunity to play his or her concerto with the FSYO's Symphonic Orchestra in this season's final concert. Jake Chabot

Jake Chabot, 17, is a senior in the Dr. Phillips High School Visual and Performing Arts Magnet. Jake has been playing flute since the age of 8, and also plays piccolo, saxophone, and piano. This is Jake's 7th year as a member of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra. He has been principal flute of FSYO's Symphonic orchestra for the past 2 years and was a Concerto Competition Winner in 2009. He has been working with Irene Pruzan, his private flute teacher, for the past 5 years.

Among Jake's greatest moments was his recent attendance to the 6-week Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan this past summer. Jake was an Emerson Scholar recipient which covered full tuition, was principal flute in the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, and received the Fine Arts Award in Music for Orchestral Flute. Last February, Jake won the Florida Flute Association High School Young Artist Soloist Competition.

In addition, Jake was Florida All-State first chair flute for three consecutive years, playing piccolo this past year, and Orange County Public School All-County Band first chair flute for five consecutive years. In 2009, at the Bach Festival Society (Rollins College) Young Artist Competition, Jake was a 2nd Place Overall Finalist. For 2 years, he attended the Honors Chamber Winds Camp at Florida State University on a full scholarship.


Camille Glazer

Camille started piano and violin lessons at 2 years old in Montreal, her native city. Switching to viola at 8, she also picked up the french horn at 13, all the while continuing her piano studies with her mother.

A member of FSYO since she was 7, she is also a member of the local chapter of Sweet Adelines with her mother, the Boone High School Wind Symphony, and the Glazer Trio, not to mention the family's jazz quartet and their own vocal group.

She has played at hundreds of concerts at the Central Florida White House, and has been a fixture at All State and All County for several years. She was principal horn at the FSU summer camp and she was invited to participate to the Daytona Horn Camp, run by Heather and David Johnson. She played french horn and piano last year at Carnegie Hall with the Boone High School Wind Symphony. She has performed for the Orlando Philharmonic Sounds of Summer Series. She studies horn with Kathy Thomas and viola with Mauricio Cespedes.


Michaela Novakovic

Michaela Novakovic grew up in Sorrento, Florida, with her parents and three siblings, Stevan, Christianna, and Mariana. Michaela has always enjoyed school, beginning as a homeschooler and subsequently attending non-traditional private, virtual, and public schools. She is currently a full-time, dual-enrolled senior at Mount Dora High School in Lake County. She began studying the harp with Rosalind Beck at the age of nine and continues to do so. Having joined the FSYO in the eighth grade, she has been a member for 5 years. In addition, she has "guested" with various local college, high school, and church orchestras and served as Co-Principal with the Sewanee Symphony in Tennessee. She frequently plays her harp to benefit charitable causes for the arts, for ill and abused children, and for the elderly. In her spare time, Michaela enjoys volunteering for various Christian and charitable organizations such as Clean the World, The Sharing Center, Florida Hospital, Liberty Counsel, and Good News Clubs. In college, she plans to pursue a dual track of harp performance and education. She wishes to thank Mr. Lane and Mr. Dupuis for making FSYO a great learning and growing experience for her.


Stephen Huber Weber

Stephen Huber Weber is a 9th grade student with Seminole County Virtual School. This is his 7th season with FSYO. He has played both violin and viola for FSYO and currently plays viola in Symphonic. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and competitive fencing.

Alex Lane

Alex Lane is currently a senior at Winter Park High School. Alex is determined to become a professional French horn player in either a United States service band or a major orchestra. For the past two summers, Alex has attended Brevard Music Center festival in Brevard North Carolina under direction of Keith Lockhart, Conductor of the Boston Pops. While at Brevard, Alex studied with Richard Deane who is 3rd horn in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Alex was also accepted into the Young Artist Orchestra at Tanglewood. Alex is always inspired by his extremely musical talented family and is preparing intensely for college auditions. Alex will be applying to The Julliard School, Curtis, New England Conservatory, Peabody and Roosevelt Conservatory.


Charles Édouard Glazer

Charles started his piano lessons with his mom at 6 months old, and picked up the violin at 3 and a half. He started playing bass at 8, the same year he started playing at the FSYO.

He has played at hundreds of concerts at the Central Florida White House and elsewhere, is a fixture at All-State and All-County (both orchestra and jazz), and also played bass for the Tri-State Band Festival. He was lead bassist in the first Jazz Ensemble at FSU Summer Jazz Camp, and went on to be Concertmaster of the same institution's Orchestra Camp, that same year. He is part of the Glazer family vocal group, as well as their jazz quartet, and the Glazer Trio. He has performed for the Orlando Philharmonic Sounds of Summer Series and he has won several state wide competitions on violin in the past few years. He continues his violin studies with Leu Gurevich.

He will perform the piano solo in Gershwin's Rapsody in Blue later in the season with the Boone High School Wind Symphony, and he played bass last year at Carnegie Hall with the same group. He is a very gifted musician, he wants to double major in Math and Physics in College.


Juan Soto

Juan Soto began playing clarinet at 12 years old in his middle school band program. Upset that he did not place for a saxophone spot, he started a serious pursuit to excel at clarinet. Within a year of playing Juan was accepted into the All State band and was principle of the All County band in the 7th grade. Juan Soto has been an All State participant for four consecutive years and has served as principal in the all state bands for three. Currently, he is a Deland High School IB senior hoping to maintain a balance between a rigorous academic and musical experience. As school he participates in SGA, SNITS, Model U.N, ANHS, Key Club, and academic team. Through his musical endeavors at the prestigious Interlochen summer music camp, he aspires to become a professional musician some day and teach. Lastly, Juan has studied clarinet with Lynn Musco for five years and is an adamant believer that music through the FSYO, lessons, and honor bands have kindled an everlasting passion for the arts in him.


Rebecca Edge

Rebecca Edge is twelve years old and in the 7th grade. She has played violin for 7 years. This is her 4th year in FSYO, and her second in the Symphonic Orchestra. She enjoys studying with her teacher, Lev Gurevich. This summer she went to BRAVO chamber music workshop in Niagara. Running cross country is one of her hobbies. She loves playing in the orchestra, chamber music, and Irish fiddle music.
