Sunday, May 10th, 2015 was a day worthy of remembrance in the FSYO archives, as the orchestra wrapped up its 58th season with stellar performances at the Bob Carr. Selections from Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Rossini, among others, enthralled the audience throughout the afternoon. Symphonic's principal floutist, Jessica Chancey, made her solo debut on stage as she performed Franz Doppler's Pastorale Hongroise with the orchestra. The day was tinged with sadness, however, as it marked FSYO's final concert with Maestro Andy Lane, conductor of the Symphonic orchestra and a long-standing member of the organization. As a farewell to the esteemed conductor, students and alumni presented an emotional thank-you video to Maestro Lane, in which students expressed their thanks and said their good-byes to their teacher, while Symphonic's rendition of Mahler's 5th Symphony played in the background. Additionally, the organization presented Maestro Lane with a memoir in the form of a published photo album, containing memories from his performances, adventures, and good times with FSYO in the past.
In addition to the concert, FSYO hosted a silent auction in which over 90 gift baskets full of goods donated by local businesses were put up for bids. All in all, the organization brought in almost $8000! This year, FSYO farewelled 25 graduating seniors. Check out their senior bios and our silent auction donors below:

Orlando, Fla. – The Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra is excited to celebrate the closing of another outstanding season with the 58th Season Finale Concert, taking place Sunday, May 10, 2015, 4:00PM, at the historic Bob Carr Theater. All four of the organization's ensembles will be performing and twenty-five graduating seniors will be recognized for their dedication to FSYO and their passion for music development.
Taking the stage for her FSYO solo debut is the Symphonic Orchestra's principal flutist, Ms. Jessica Chancey. Jessica is one of three winners from this season's concerto competition and will be performing Doppler's Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise. When asked why she chose this piece, Jessica replied, "I feel that it's a challenging yet fun piece to play. It starts out very lyrical and almost hypnotic, then the mood changes and it becomes more enthusiastic. "Hongroise" translated means "Hungarian" and I really love the ethnic Hungarian flavor of the piece throughout." Jessica hopes to become a Professional Orchestral Musician and is well on her way: attending the prestigious and competitive Tanglewood Institute this summer and beginning her undergraduate studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the fall.
FSYO will also host a silent auction to take place during the event, featuring items from some of Central Florida's best restaurant, retail and entertainment venues, including special Mother's Day items perfect for that special woman in your life. Proceeds will serve to support and enhance the opportunities FSYO can offer to nurture the talents of young musicians throughout Central Florida. Doors will open at 2:30pm for silent auction viewing/bidding. Bidding will also take place at intermission.
With so much to be excited about, this concert also comes with an air of sadness as this will be the final performance with FSYO's out-going music director, Mr. Andrew Lane. Mr. Lane, who has served the FSYO as Music Director since 1998, began his time with the organization in 1994 as conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra. We thank Mr. Lane for his passion for music and relentless focus on student engagement, which have helped to establish FSYO as a leader in the Central Florida Arts Community.
The concert will begin at 4 p.m. at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W Livingston St, Downtown Orlando on Sunday, May 10, 2015. Tickets range from $8.00 to $16.00 and can be purchased via www.fsyo.org. As usual, all teachers receive free admission to this and all FSYO concerts.

This month we interviewed Symphonic senior and principal flutist, Jessica Chancey. Jessica is one of our 3 concerto competition winners and will be performing her concerto with the Symphonic Orchestra at our Finale concert on May 10th!
Tell us why you chose your concerto piece?
I chose "Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise" by Franz Doppler because I feel that it's a challenging yet fun piece to play. It starts out very lyrical and almost hypnotic, then the mood changes and it becomes more enthusiastic. How long have you been in FSYO? What made you want to join?
This is my 5th season with FSYO. When I joined I was 2nd chair in Prelude. The following year I auditioned for Philharmonia, but ended up in Prelude again, 1st chair this time. I then switched flute teachers and began taking lessons from Colleen Blagov (Principal flute of the Orlando Philharmonic) and after only a few short months studying with Colleen, I auditioned again and jumped from Prelude to Principal 2nd in Symphonic! Initially it
was my mom's idea that I consider joining FSYO. I really loved playing flute/piccolo in my middle school band and my mom suggested that I might enjoy playing in a youth orchestra also. She was right because I have really loved all five years of being a member of FSYO!
What is my most memorable FSYO moment?
My most memorable FSYO moment would have to be the day that Symphonic sight read Shostakovich's 10th Symphony, 2nd Movement. It is very difficult and technical and we sounded very, VERY bad. We all laughed at how bad we sounded those first few times... even Mr. Lane cracked up during our early attempts.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I would love to play flute with a professional orchestra. That would be my dream job... "Professional Orchestral Musician." I really love the feeling I get when performing within a group of talented players. Sometimes I even get goosebumps while listening to the music around me as we play. I remember getting some major goosebumps at the end of "Pictures at an Exhibition".

This month we interviewed Chase Hippler, one of our Symphonic Orchestra members, and a long-time member of FSYO.
FSYO: How long have you been in FSYO? What made you want to join?
I have been a member of FSYO for two years. The experience came highly recommended to me by a fellow FSYO member and trombone player, Nicholas Dufresne.
FSYO: What are your plans after you graduate high school?
I will be attending the United States Air Force Academy as a cadet majoring in astronautical engineering. After completing my education, I will serve in the US Air Force.
FSYO: What do you do when you're not rehearsing?
As an International Baccalaureate (IB) student at Winter Park High School much of my time is spent studying. But, also I train as a member of the Winter Park High School Varsity Track team. Most recently I began flight lessons and have earned the nickname "Maverick". My passions are surfing, blacksmithing, and working toward my pilot's license.
FSYO: What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be a jet pilot in the USAF.
