FSYO PRESENTS SPRING CLASSICS Ft. Jean-Marie Glazer, cello

2018-19 FSYO Poster Spring preview 1-11

Orlando, FL – On Sunday, February 3, Florida Symphony Youth Orchestras will present our second annual Spring Classics concert which will be held at the Edgewater High School auditorium. The concert will feature FSYO's Overture Strings, Prelude, and Philharmonia orchestras, and intends to recognize the invaluable contributions of classical music. The concert aims to encourage audience appreciation for classical music and the profound effect it has on student development.

FSYO Alumnus, Jean-Marie Glazer (cello), will be the guest artist at this concert, performing Petit Concert Pour Mon Garçon. This concert is the second time the Philharmonia Orchestra will be performing a concerto. Concertos have always been a privilege reserved for the Symphonic Orchestra until last season. Additional pieces that are being performed are by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Respighi.

"Petit Concert Pour Mon Garçon is a one-movement concertino in C minor that is about 10 minutes long. I wrote the cello part in a few hours, but it took me a year to structure the piece and orchestrate it. It was written as a gift for my son Jean-Marie's 18th birthday, although I am afraid he received it a year late.

Jean-Marie was hard at work practicing the Shostakovich cello concerto in the next room when I came up with the cello part, so of course, there are influences. However, I used some devices I have been working on in the past few years into the orchestra parts, such as the quickly shifting tonal centers using simple triads that one will hear clearly in the woodwinds in the middle section. The ending of the piece, with the addition of the choral on top of the cello part and the bubbling, repeated diminished motives, was an experiment in what the brain could process and how much the audience would adjust the balance, having just heard the cello play that same part.

The hope is that the cello part will come through even though the whole orchestra is playing quite loud. We shall find out the result of the experiment when we all hear the piece together for the first time, for which I am grateful to FSYO for making it happen". - Composer, Benoit Glazer

The concert will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Edgewater High School - 3100 Edgewater Drive, Orlando, FL 32804. Tickets range from $10 to $15 and can be purchased at www.fsyo.org. At this time we are happy to offer all furloughed federal employees and their families up to four free tickets per family for this performance. Please call our office at (407) 999-7800 to reserve your tickets. You will need to show a federal ID at the box office the day of the performance. As always, teachers receive free admission to this and most FSYO events.

Year End Gift

Few things make me happier than Sundays. While many are using the day to unwind, we are preparing to host nearly 300 students from 9 counties for weekly rehearsal. You may think that these students would dread giving up a weekend day to practice, but it is just the opposite. The students arrive with smiles on their faces and excitement in their eyes, ready to do what they love, PLAY CLASSICAL MUSIC! And for many of our students, this is possible because of YOU!

Did you know that an average of 30% of FSYO students participate in our programs on a scholarship? That means that 1 in every 15 students needs YOUR help to receive these life-changing experiences, and life-changing they are. As our organization grows, the number of students participating in need of a scholarship grows as well. In addition to regular tuition fees, our students need assistance participating in the exciting new experiences that we are creating for them (such as tours to Europe and performing at Carnegie Hall!). FSYO has a commitment that it will not turn away any qualifying student because of an inability to pay tuition.

This is where you come in. But don't take our word for it, hear it directly from some of the students you support:

Jessica, an FSYO alumna currently studying Flute Performance, had this to say about her experience: “FSYO has been a wonderful learning experience for me. Participating in FSYO for five years helped shape me as a musician and grow my love of music. Currently, I am a music major attending the Cleveland Institute of Music, with an aspiration of becoming a professional orchestral musician.” Jessica has gone on to win the Miami Summer Music Festival Concerto Competition performing in the New World Center, was a finalist in the 2015 Florida Flute Associations (FFA) Young Artist Competition, and was a winner of the advanced masterclass competition for FFA. Jessica is a founding member of Catharsis, an up-and-coming woodwind quintet founded at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2016. Recently, Jessica beat out 30 other flutists and won a permanent chair with the Canton Symphony Orchestra in Ohio.

Alyssa, an FSYO violinist, had this to say about her experience: "FSYO has surrounded me with a community of people who take interest in music the same way I do. It's helped me experience once in a lifetime opportunities such as traveling to perform for different audiences around the world. Being in FSYO has helped me solidify my career choice in becoming a performance musician." Alyssa currently serves as the Concertmistress for FSYO's Symphonic Orchestra, performed as a soloist with the Maitland Symphony Orchestra as the winner of the CFCArts YAO Concert Competition in 2016, served as the Concertmistress for the Winter Park Chamber Music Academy, and is the 2018-2019 winner of FSYO's Concerto Competition.

It has been proven time and time again that students, who are exposed to the arts, flourish in all areas of education.
